…Did you know that one third of all boating deaths involve alcohol?.. to say nothing about serious boating accidents. And, an untold number of less serious boating accidents are alcohol related. While this is bad news for the person doing the drinking and driving, it s even worse for his passengers and the other boaters he meets out there trying to enjoy themselves for a day on the water.
To make matters worse, a boat operator is likely to become impaired a lot faster on the water than if he were driving a car. The sun dehydrates the boater. As he drinks to quench his thirst, the alcohol is absorbed faster and has an enhanced effect. He gets looped on just two or three beers, when ordinarily he would be able to handle this amount of alcohol.
Alcohol is also more dangerous to boaters because boat operators are almost always less experienced and less confident on the water than on the highway. Recreational boaters don’t have the experience of daily boat operation. In fact, according to Coast Guard data, boaters…
